During my time at Wesleyan University, I have not only acquired crucial skills such as the ability to demonstrate my knowledge, conceptualize and learn new information, and manage my time efficiently, but I have also learned the importance of utilizing the resources that can provide support in acquiring such skills. At Wesleyan, taking advantage of campus resources allowed me to grow as a student and person.

I no longer struggle with exams because I’ve gained time management skills and learned how to conceptualize class material, but I didn’t do it alone. It was the resources on campus that I took advantage of, which led me to grow as a student at Wesleyan.

In particular, the Black Undergraduate Medical Association trained me to handle work under pressure by teaching me to work through problem sets independently and with peers under a time limit/frame. Our weekly meetings placed me in a relatable and supportive community of students. During our meetings, we had access to study resources like extra problem sets. We worked in collaboration with one another on logistics, trained our time management skills, and increased our comfort with public speaking during discussions on specific problems in the problem sets.

The Afrobeats dance team (SUYA), Bite The Hand (FGLI Magazine), and the Pre-Dental student club also significantly impacted my self-development at Wesleyan. BUMA’s support in managing my stress allowed me to explore communities on campus and foster connections and creativity.

During my time in Sophomore year, I’m improving my leadership and nurturing skills in BUMA as a TA for General Chemistry. I’m tutoring and advising students who were in my same shoes last year.

And so, these resources have all grown into communities for me– ones that I strive to give back to and succor to.
